Amazing Gracie

THE FUN-FILLED MUSICAL REVUE

CELEBRATING THE COMEDY AND MUSIC OF

Gracie Fields

Amazing Gracie, based on the comedy and songs of the legendary British entertainer Gracie Fields, is a fast-paced, vaudeville-style musical revue starring Prince Edward Islanders Pamela Campbell, Nancy Beck, and Andrew Zinck. Compact and portable, the production is bright and optimistic, with crisp, energetic, clever performances and colourful, zany costumes and props. In typical Gracie-fashion, certain lyrics have been rewritten to include local references, so the show can be tailor-made for any community.

Amazing Gracie features hilarious story-songs peopled by dozens of lovable and quirky characters, ranging from the forlorn, overlooked musician in "I Took My Harp to a Party (But Nobody Asked Me to Play)" to the maiden-in-distress in "She Fought Like a Tiger for Her Honour" to the dysfunctional family in "Turn Herbert's Face to the Wall, Mother".

Gracie Fields had an astonishingly broad vocal and emotional range, which she shared freely with her audience. She would go straight from a gentle lullaby into a raucous ear-splitting whoop, and her listeners loved it! Without attempting to impersonate the incomparable Gracie, Amazing Gracie keeps true to her spirit and style. Outrageously wacky songs like "Walter, Walter, Lead Me to the Altar", "What Can You Give a Nudist on His Birthday?", and Gracie's famous "The Biggest Aspidistra in the World" are juxtaposed with subtle renditions of familiar ballads, including "Danny Boy" and "When I Grow Too Old to Dream".

Though the overall tone of Amazing Gracie is lighthearted and brilliantly silly, there are unforgettable moments of stillness and moving simplicity. Appealing to all ages, Amazing Gracie is good old-fashioned fun!
